A powerful storm that passed through the area early Tuesday morning left trees down in yards throughout Perham.

The National Weather Service (NWS) estimates that winds ranging from 60 to 70 mph hit the region around 7 a.m., knocking out power for most of downtown Perham. Power was restored a little after 8:30 a.m.

The storm tracked from west of Fargo, through Detroit Lakes and Frazee and into Perham, said NWS Meteorologist Jim Kaiser.

A large pine tree located near the corner of First Street South and Fox Street had fallen on a power line. Law enforcement said the tree was smoking, but did not erupt into flames. Homeowners have started the process of clearing the trees and branches that now line their yards.

An excessive heat warning remains in effect through 1 a.m. Thursday morning. Forecasts call for a high on Wednesday of 90-95.
