Hoffman tweet complaint dismissed
ST. PAUL -- The chairwoman of the Minnesota Senate ethics committee has dismissed a complaint about a Sen. Gretchen Hoffman tweet.
Sen. Michelle Fischbach, R-Paynesville, on Tuesday ordered the ethics complaint to be dismissed after Hoffman fulfilled requirements the committee established.
Hoffman, R-Vergas, sent a letter to Sen. Barb Goodwin, DFL-Colombia Heights, apologizing for the tweet sent during a heated health and human services debate last month.
"This letter is intended to be the written apology from me to you indicated by the Minnesota Senate Subcommittee on Ethical Conduct..." Hoffman wrote to Goodwin. "I am certainly sorry for my misunderstanding of what you said and how I subsequently handled it."
Hoffman tweeted on May 18: "Sen. Goodwin just called people with mental illness idiots and imbeciles while debating HHS bill."
Goodwin used the phrase to explain to colleagues about progress made since homes for the mentally ill were called institutions for "idiots, imbeciles and the insane."
The ethics panel voted to dismiss the complaint against Hoffman if she apologized to Goodwin, if she removed her original tweet and if she tweeted a link to the committee's report on the case. Fischbach's Tuesday letter confirmed that the chairwoman agreed that Hoffman complied.
