Hoium, who previously worked for Becker County, will oversee the county maintenance section that consists of 33 individuals and provides routine maintenance services to the highways and bridges of the county. These maintenance operations are divided into five maintenance areas, which contain a total of 10 garages.

He will report directly to County Engineer Rick West, who introduced Hoium to commissioners on Aug. 13.

The county's highway department has under its jurisdiction 1,052 miles of highway, all of which are bituminous surfaced, as well as 142 bridges. The annual department budget is approximately $12 million.

Revenue sources include local, state and federal funds.

The county highway department prides itself in providing top-level services to the citizens of Otter Tail County as efficiently as possible.

"We're happy to have Rick on board," said West. "As a department we try to stay progressive and are always exploring new technologies to remain competitive in today's rapidly changing environment."

The department has three sections: engineering/construction, maintenance and administration.

The engineering section has a staff of nine and is responsible for engineering design and construction inspection of highway and bridge projects. This section also provides technical support to other county departments.

The administration section is comprised of five individuals, including the county engineer, and provides management, accounting services and clerical support.
