An assisted living facility in New York Mills has new owners and is set to re-open Jan. 11.

Brent and Missy look forward to the opportunity to serve the community with the assisted living facility, and both bring experience in care-giving to the business.

Missy is currently an Occupational Therapy Assistant at the nursing home in Staples. She has worked the past seven years in nursing home settings.

Brent is an EMT with NY Mills Fire & Rescue, as well as a certified CPR instructor. Brent will teach CPR and first aid to staff prior to Home Sweet Home's opening.

Brent and Missy both grew up here and are New York Mills High School graduates.

"We're excited about owning a business in our hometown," Missy said. "This is something that's needed in the community and we really look forward to opening Jan. 11."

Home Sweet Home has room for six residents. There are six bedrooms with four bathrooms. There will be one full-time person on staff at the home 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

A Registered Nurse has been hired and will be responsible for training staff on various areas of care and medication administration.

Home Sweet Home offers a "home like" setting for the elderly who are no longer able to independently care for themselves and are requiring supervision or assistance with activities of daily living.

Staff will assist in daily living and health related activities, as well as provide weekly laundry services, housekeeping, socialization, and exercise.

Brent and Missy feel exercise and socialization activities are important aspects of care at the facility and have purchased a Wii game system, and exercise bike.

Open house

An open house is scheduled Sunday, Jan. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is invited to stop by for coffee and cookies, and visit the facility.

Home Sweet Home assisted living is licensed by the Minnesota Department of Health.

Purchase of the home was funded in part through a New York Mills Economic Development Authority loan.
