Honoring our nation’s heroes: Memorial Day 2014
The Perham VFW Post 4020 and Auxiliary, jointly with Legion Post 61 and Auxiliary, will hold their traditional Memorial Day service in Perham on Monday, May 26.
The service will begin at 10 a.m. and will be held at Prairie Wind Middle School. Participants will include Boy Scout Troop 321, the VFW, American Legion and their Auxiliaries. Gina Cavanaugh, along with Ann Dardis, will provide music.
The public is invited and welcome to attend.
Along with the service, the Perham Masonic Lodge will host an all-you-can-eat waffle breakfast, with flavored syrups, beverages and sausage from the Perham Locker, starting at 7 a.m. and lasting until noon at the middle school.
Proceeds from the waffle breakfast will benefit the In Their Own Words (ITOW) Veterans Museum. Advance tickets are on sale now at ITOW. Prices are $7 in advance or $7.50 at the door. Children five and younger eat free. Carryout breakfast will be available.
New York Mills
A Memorial Day service will be held in New York Mills, at the school auditorium, on Monday, May 26 at 10 a.m.
The service will include a prelude by the band, advancement of colors, the national anthem, pledge of allegiance and invocation. This will be followed by the program, which will feature a welcome, a duet, “An American Medley,” and keynote speaker Dr. James Tuorila.
Tuorila is the co-founder of Freedom Flight, Inc., which uses hot air balloons to bring awareness to the cause of Vietnam POWs/MIAs. He is also a pilot with Honor Flights, an organization that flies World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. to see the World War II Memorial.
The service will also include a quartet, reading, tribute to the military by the school band, benediction, and a final song of “Sleep, Soldier, Boy, Sleep.”
This will be followed by the Honor Roll, with the Ladies placing wreaths. The service will finish with Taps.
On Sunday, May 25, the Women’s Relief Corps and Dent Haimerl American Legion Post 148 will remember veterans in a public program at the Richville Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.
The service will eventually move to a nearby river for a rifle salute and placement of a wreath in the river to commemorate Navy servicemen and women. A luncheon will be available at the Richville Senior Center after the service.
In case of rain, the service will be held at the Richville Methodist Church.
The Dent Haimerl American Legion Post 148 will hold a Memorial Day ceremony on Saturday, May 24 at the Dent Community Center at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend.
The Legion will also place flags in the cemeteries around Dent for Memorial Day.
