Hundreds show up for Perham Turtle Races

Email

On July 7, a record-breaking 516 racers showed up for the Perham Turtle Races. The event was highly anticipated by many who remember Mayor Tim Meehl's promise earlier this summer to shave his head if more than 500 racers turned out.

But the attention wasn't on the soon-to-be-bald mayor, it was all on the turtles and the kids who raced them.

The grand-prize winner was Brett Gray from Portland, Oregon. Delaney Hoger from Tinley Park, IL, got second place. The third place ribbon went to Sydney Smith from Watseka, IL. The three children beat out over 500 racers.

Racers came from all over the country, from Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. There were also some international candidates, from Alberta, Canada, and Thunder Bay Ontario, Canada.
