PELICAN RAPIDS/HAWLEY — Perham got two big individual victories on the home courses of their closest competitors to keep pace and in the lead of the Heart O’ Lakes Conference girls golf standings Thursday.

Becca Huus continued to shoot well in less than ideal conditions winning medalist honors at the Heart O’ Lakes - Pelican Rapids carding a 38 and leading Perham to a runner-up finish to Hawley.

Liz Sonnenberg got her first win of the season shooting 40 later in the day at HOL-Hawley. The meet was originally scheduled as the first nine of Thursday but 39 degree temperatures forced the meet to later in the day when temperatures were better, but not great.

“It was cold, but the girls played great; they are so tough,” Head Coach Cory Solberg said. “To be able to golf well in those temperatures is unreal, because it is such a difficult skill. It's hard enough to golf when it's 80 degrees.”

The HOL is a three-team race this year with Perham holding off the Nuggets and Vikings. Of the eight teams in conference meets, the winning team is awarded one point down to eight for last place.

Perham’s team win by eight strokes at Hawley pushed the Yellowjackets’ lead to two points in the team standings over Hawley.

Pelican Rapids had pulled into a tie with Perham at seven team points coming into the meet on their home course. Perham finished six shots ahead of the Vikings and the one-point differential between second and third place gave Perham a one-point lead in first place with nine points to Pelican’s 10.

Hawley’s win pulled the Nuggets into a tie with the Vikings in second place with 10 points after starting the day with nine points.

Sonnenberg and Huus complimented each other at both meets. Sonnenberg finished fourth overall at Pelican behind Huus’ win. Those were important results as the Nuggets won the meet by putting three golfers in the top six, including a sixth place score of 48 from eighth-grader Zoe Dauner.

Huus finished third at Hawley, two strokes back in third place to compliment Sonnenberg’s win.

“(Huus) has really stepped her game up and has competed at every meet that we have gone to,” Solberg said. “She picked up right where she left off last season and has played great despite the horrible conditions. Liz Sonnenberg has been close to breaking through and had a great day, especially at Hawley.”

Sonnenberg’s victory is important in that it takes some pressure of Huus to be the top golfer every round of every meet. Not that the sophomore is not comfortable in that position. Huus took over last year with the top Section meet result and has been the team leader ever since.

The key to success for Perham is to get contributions and lower scores from the rest of the team, which has seen progress as the year has transpired.

“Danielle Graham, Micaela Soule, Alisha Rosen, and Hannah Solberg have also picked their game up and have contributed to our team at different points this season,” said Solberg. “It should make for some great golf next week.”

Next week the girls and boys golf teams tee off at Wildflower Golf Course in Detroit Lakes Tuesday in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference tournament.

Perham has had an impressive season to hold on to first place with one senior, Soule, and one junior, Solberg. The rest of the team members range from eighth to 10th grade, showcasing a bright future for Perham girls’ golf.

Pelican Rapids’ top golfer Alexa Bekkerus finished third at Pelican Rapids five shots behind Huus and was runner-up to Sonnenberg at Hawley, finishing two strokes back in a solid day on both courses. Huus, Sonnenberg, Dauner and Bekkerus had top six finishes at both of Thursday’s meets.
