Irish stew cook-off raises funds for 'Quilts of Valor'
On St. Patrick's Day, March 17, the Underwood American Legion and the Underwood Lions Club are hosting a "Quilts of Valor" fundraiser.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a raffle, silent auction, bake sale, wine tasting and other activities.
There will be an Irish Stew Cook-Off from 5 to 7 p.m. with several local restaurants competing.
Four area restaurants will be represented at the event, each with a special Irish stew concoction: Perham's one and only Irish pub, Mulligan's; Shoreline, Battle Lake; Happy Gizzards, Ottertail; and Amor Rumors. Doing the Irish honors for Mulligan's is a chef with a decidedly Scandinavian name: Steve Lund.
The Quilts of Valor is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to making handmade quilts for our injured soldiers. Over the years, these volunteers have made hundreds of quilts and sent them to injured soldiers in various hospitals.
The Perham Quilts of Valor group has been working weekly for several years.
Proceeds from the event will be used to assist the Quilts of Valor ladies from Otter Tail County who have been invited to Fort Knox in early May to present their handmade quilts to injured soldiers. Donations from individuals and businesses will help offset the cost of supplies to make the quilts and a portion of the travel expenses for the trip.
Volunteers for this event are hoping to raise a total of $20,000 for the Quilts of Valor organization so the members can continue creating these beautiful quilts for our wounded soldiers.
Individuals and businesses will be asked to consider donating a gift for the auction, gift certificates or a monetary donation. Checks can be made payable to Quilts of Valor and mailed to the American Legion Post 489, Attn: QOV, PO Box 61, Underwood, MN 56586-0061, or can be handed to an event volunteer for delivery to the Legion.
