The Yellowjackets girls basketball team got off to an advantageous start against Wadena-Deer Creek, but dropped just their second game of the season, 66-55.

Perham took advantage of transition baskets to get an early lead, but the Wolverines came back strong and once they took the lead in the first half they took control of the game.

"We definitely did not shoot the ball very well, and when you combine that with mental mistakes and turnovers it becomes really difficult to beat a good team like Wadena-Deer Creek," Head Coach John Gullingsrud said.

Perham had five less turnovers and stole 11 balls to the Wolverines' six, but field goal percentage was the deciding factor.

Wadena-Deer Creek shot lights out, 48 percent from the field, while Perham struggled making 19 of 66 shots for 28.8 percent.

From the three-point line, Wadena made seven of 11, 63.6 percent. Perham was a woeful 6 percent making only one of 17 attempts.

The Volkmann sisters, Courtney and Caitlin, led all scorers with 21 and 15 points respectively.

Katrina Moenkedick scored 15 to lead Perham. Becky Stoll and Steph Miller each had 10.

Perham closed to within four points in the middle of the second half, but missed free throws contributed to not being able to track down the Wolverines.

Perham 63, Park Rapids 38

Perham rebounded with a 63-38 shellacking at Park Rapids.

With the score knotted at sevens, a 23-6 run gave Perham a comfortable lead at halftime.

"We started off slow and didn't seem to have a lot of energy."

Despite turnovers on offense and missed assignments on defense, the cushion would hold.

Perham held Park Rapids to only 25 percent from the field, 15 percent from three. The Jackets shot 33 percent from the field and behind the arc and won the free-throw battle sinking 12 of 19.

"We just didn't put together a very crisp game overall but were still able to come away with a road win which we will definitely take at this point of the season."

A make-up date for the Perham girls game versus Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 15 at Prairie Wind Middle School, pending the hiring of officials. This is a makeup date from a game postponed on January 21. Tip-off time has yet to be announced.
