State champs

The road got more difficult with a trip to the defending state champion and ninth-ranked 2A Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines Tuesday night.

Wadena-Deer Creek defeated Perham 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 25-13) to remain undefeated on the season at 11-0.

In 11 matches this season, the Wolverines have only lost three games and have yet to be forced past game four in a match.

"The Yellowjackets came out relaxed tonight," Head Coach Dan Christenson said. "We felt the pressure was on last year's undefeated state champions, instead of us."

Long volleys made the match an exciting one for those in attendance.

According to Christenson, it was a ball control type of night -- whoever could withstand the longest volleys, would be the victor.

"WDC beat us in that regard."

Perham proved they could hold their own against one of the best teams in the state taking game two to extra points before dropping the middle frame 27-25.

"Had we just been able to pick up two more points in set two to win, the momentum may have switched and the outcome could have been a bit different."

Brooke Mickelson had 10 kills. Katrina Moenkedick had nine. Wolverine Brittney Noon led all players with 18 kills. Emily Miron had 13.

Allie Christenson had 11 assists to lead Perham, while Heather Theisen set up the Wolverines with 34 assists.

Homecoming game

Perham moved into a three-way logjam for second place in the Heart O' Lakes Conference at 2-1 after a sweep of Barnesville 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 26-24) on Thursday of Homecoming week.

The Trojans never threatened in the first two sets, as Perham cruised to nine and eight point victories before closing out the match 26-24.

Moenkedick had 17 kills; Mickelson had eight kills and 21 digs.

The Yellowjackets registered eight blocks, three from Miranda Lockhart, a pair from Katie Herrmann and Mickelson and one from Ana Erickson.

Allie Christenson had three aces and Moenkedick had two that were on back-to-back serves landing right on the sideline between the front and back line of the Trojans and in front of the Barnesville bench.

Christenson set up 18 assists in the victory.

Perham travels to Hawley Thursday, Sept. 29 looking to enact revenge for a 3-1 defeat in Perham earlier in the season.
