Coming off an upset loss to Frazee on Monday, the Yellowjacket baseball team did not have it any easier Tuesday.

The number five AA state-ranked Staples-Motley Cardinals came calling to Al Krueger Field and proved they deserve their position sweeping Perham 6-3 and 13-9 upping their record to 11-1.

Perham dropped to .500 at 6-6.

Cardinals starting pitcher Gunner Johnson, a crafty southpaw with a dirty curveball, kept the Jacket bats at bay for five innings. Johnson took care of three innings all by himself striking out nine.

An early Perham second inning threat to the plate saw the bottom of the order work Johnson deep in the count. Two runners reached before Johnson fanned T.J. Studer for out number three.

Studer pitched a solid game going five innings, surrendering four runs, three earned, on seven hits. The Cardinals put up single runs in the first, second, third and fifth innings before putting up two insurance runs in the sixth off reliever Andrew Muer.

Johnson hit the 100-pitch count in the fifth and showed he was not infallible, as Perham would score one in the fifth and two in the sixth finally chasing the Cards pitcher after 5 2/3 innings.

Staples-Motley was not overpowering at the plate. The Cards manufactured their runs behind six stolen bags and two Studer balks.

Cards 13, Perham 9

Game two was no pitcher's duel.

Perham jumped out to a 5-1 third inning lead, extending it to 7-1 after the fifth.

Jesse Hein was 2-2 with three runs and three RBI. Muer and Shaun Stafki knocked in two runs each. Hein led all Jackets with five RBI between the two games.

The Cardinals would rally in the last two innings scoring twelve runs to the Jackets' two.

Seven Cardinals crossed the plate in the sixth. Lead off man Alex Jansson scored twice in the inning.

Jackets 5, Lakers 0

Thursday, Detroit Lakes came to town for a double-dip. The teams split; Perham winning game one 5-0 behind Brad Ellingson's one-hit shutout before dropping the nightcap 12-7.

For three innings, the battle was waged on the mound between Ellignson and Laker starter Brock Johnson. Johnson limited the Jackets to five hits but Perham made them count in the fourth inning.

Ben Brill started the rally reaching on an error followed by a double smoked to the fence by Ben Bucholz. Both would score on a base hit by Stafki.

Stafki, Jon Langlie and Taylor Doll rounded the bags on RBI by Mike Warne, Ellingson and Muer to cap the only scoring inning of the game.

Ellingson threw 92 pitches, walking two and striking out four in a dominating performance. Johnson was Ellingson's only nemesis at the plate getting the only hit for the Lakers.

Jackets 10, Vikings 0

Perham would end a hectic week on the diamond with a 10-0 rout of Pelican Rapids.

An eight-run first inning put the game out of reach early. Viking starter Andy Johnson was roughed up for six hits, while the defense behind him committed two critical errors allowing four of the eight early runs to cross unearned.

At the plate, Johnson was the only batter to hit safely for Pelican Rapids. His singles were the only hits allowed by starter Trace Miller and Bucholz in relief.

Stafki and Altstadt would score on RBI from David Stoll and Desmine Duffy to seal the win in the bottom half of the fourth.

The one-two punch of Doll and Warne, at the top of the order, went 4-5 with three RBI to lead the Jackets.

The Jackets will wind up the season looking to improve their current mark of 8-7.
