Jackets send five wrestlers to state
FERGUS FALLS -- Cody Nylander and Jesse Hein, the anchors on Perham's state-bound wrestling team both won Section 8AA titles in Fergus Falls over the weekend making their upcoming trip to St. Paul a three-day affair.
Three other Yellowjackets will be joining Hein and Nylander in the individual portion of the state tournament, after Thursday's team meet.
Senior Brandon Lueders, 33-8, returns to the state tournament at 126 pounds. He finished runner up to Crookston's Cody Wieland in a 6-4 overtime match.
Senior Ty Haverland, 145 pounds, was defeated in the finals by United Clay-Becker's Wyatt Wixo 8-4. Wixo made the trip to St. Paul last season, as well.
Haverland entered the section meet with a record of 32-11.
Junior Luke Sailer, 34-6, will also make a return trip after taking the long road to qualifying. Sailer defeated Fergus Falls' Dane Ringquist 5-1 in the third place match, but needed a victory in the true second place match to advance to state.
Sailer met Parker Jackson, of Detroit Lakes for true second. Both wrestlers made the trip to St. Paul last year. Sailer shut out Jackson 4-0 to advance.
Nylander, ranked No. 1 at 220 pounds in Class 2A, with a record of 38-1, had to get by only three wrestlers to advance and he managed it quickly.
Nylander opened up against Detroit Lakes' Kirby Siewert and pinned him in 42 seconds. Tommy Weaver, of Fergus Falls, met a similar fate. He was pinned in 1:31.
Nylander shut out Brandon Ritter, of Park Rapids, 6-0, to cruise to the state tournament.
Undefeated Jesse Hein, 41-0, saw a few familiar faces on his path to the state tournament.
He took out Staples-Motley's David DeYonge in the finals by fall at 1:14.
Trai Schmidt, of Park Rapids, and Josh Albright, of Fosston/Bagley both left the mat after pins by Hein at 32 and 34 seconds each.
The section title was the third for Hein, as he makes a robust fifth trip to the state tournament. This will be the third team Hein has been a part of in St. Paul and as his senior year has progressed, like the football team, this Yellowjacket squad is his to lead.
The competition spikes in St. Paul as both Hein and Nylander found out last season.
Both wrestlers look to improve on records of one win and two losses at last year's state tournament.
