Rural Perham murder: Pipe wrench reportedly used in brutal killing of mother, son

Funeral services were held for Jerry Bentley of New York Mills, MN on Thursday, June 11 at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills with Pastor Don Salo officiating. The music was provided by Andy and Janet Tumberg and the hymns were sung by the congregation. The pallbearers were David Mann, Eric Enger, Joel Jacobs, Jerry Anderson, Robert Anderson and Clarence Anderson. Military honors were provided by the Charles D. Center V.F.W. Post #3289 of New York Mills. Jerry was laid to rest in Woodland Cemetery, New York Mills.

Jerry Basel Bentley was born on June 4, 1927 at his grandparents homestead, which is now Finn Creek Museum, rural New York Mills. His parents were the late Norman and Tegla (Tapio) Bentley. As Jerry was growing up he spent quality time with Abner and Hilda Fiskari. When Jerry was 16 years old he began sailing on the Great Lakes. He was employed on the iron ore boats for a total of 35 years. Jerry served in the United States Army from August 29, 1945 to December 6, 1946 in Alaska and was honorably discharged.

On May 9, 1953 Jerry was united in marriage to Hazel Hilma Fiskari. Their marriage was blessed with three daughters, Sandi, Lisa and Becky. Jerry and Hazel made their home on the farm in Newton Township, rural New York Mills. While Jerry continued employment on the Great Lakes, he farmed and then retired from sailing in 1991. During retirement, Jerry enjoyed the farm with his family. He also enjoyed gardening, winter spear fishing and he had a passion for polka music.

On June 8, 2009 Jerry passed away at the Elders' Home in New York Mills, Minnesota at 82 years of age. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Preceding Jerry in death were his parents; parents-in-law, Harry and Hilma Fiskari; brothers, Rueben and Marvin Bentley; brothers-in-law, Marshall and Stanley Fiskari.

 Jerry is survived by his wife, Hazel Bentley of New York Mills; daughters, Sandi Bentley of Thief River Falls, MN, Lisa (David) Mann of New York Mills and Becky (Eric) Engler of New York Mills; three grandchildren, Jeni, Megan and Tim; three great-grandchildren, Tristen, Colten Jerry and Grace; sister, Alice (Clarence) Anderson of New York Mills; brothers, Roger (Georgia) Bentley of New York Mills and Robert (Marlene) Bentley of Hoyt Lakes, MN; sisters-in-law, Kathy Bentley of New York Mills and Shirlyn Bentley of Pequot Lakes, MN; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
