Joe was born to Bernard and Mary (Niehaus) Kemper on Oct. 19, 1918, in Rosedale Township. He attended the Fish Lake Country School and worked on the home farm in Waubun. At the age of 19, Joe was drafted into the United States Army, where he served his country for three years. On Dec. 13, 1943, he married Larraine Haider at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Waubun. Upon his military discharge in 1945, Joe and Larraine purchased the Ahles farm, which they operated until 1981 when Joe retired. Known for his ability to dance, Joe looked forward to attending dances where he could polka and waltz. In his younger years, he played the violin and fiddle -- even performing at barn dances. An avid outdoorsman, Joe also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
