June 10, 1918-March 2, 2008

June Hagen-Sorter, 89, of Roseau, Minn., died Sunday, March 2, 2008.

June Bernice Dunham was born to Edward and Cora Dunham on June 10, 1918 in Drayton, N.D. She was the youngest of six children. The Dunham family moved to a homestead by Wannaska, Minn., in September 1920. June attended Wannaska School for three years, then went to the Grimstead School for five years. Her brothers and father made a sled for the horse to pull them to school in winter. Sometimes they walked the two and a half miles. After finishing school, June worked in the Roseau area for several families. She then started working at the Roseau Area Hospital. While working there in 1942, she met Oscar Hagen. They were married on June 30, 1944 at Wannaska.

June loved farming, chores, gardening, canning, and berry picking. There were lots of family gatherings on weekend and their door was always open to everyone. June played the organ at Northwood Lutheran Church on Moose River, was active in Ladies Aid, and taught Sunday School, including organizing Christmas programs. She later worked for Marshall County Social Services. On June 28, 1969, Oscar died in a car accident.

June moved to Roseau in 1970. She worked as an assistant librarian for the Roseau School District for 16 years. Education was very important to her. She received her GED and attended Bemidji State University for a time. While living in Roseau, she joined several bowling leagues and participated in many tournaments. She taught adult crocheting at adult classes, served on the Roseau Area Transit Board for many years as the treasurer, and was very active in the Roseau Senior Citizens Center. She recycled thousands of greeting cards, made lefse, and helped in any way she could.

In 1995, a long time family friend came back into June's life. They attended country school together many years before, and he had carried her lunch bucket and books. Selmer Sorter asked June to marry him, and on Sept. 21, 1995, they were married in Wannaska. They shared 10 years of love, laughter and tears. Selmer preceded June in death on May 26, 2005.

Surviving June are her daughters, LaMae Hensley of Livermore, Calif., Ilene Hagen of Nashville, Tenn., and Janice (Bryan) Ornquist of Detroit Lakes; one daughter-in-law, Kathy (Les) Sanders of Glendive, Mont.; two stepdaughters, Sylvia (Dale) Cole of Middle River, Minn., and Julie (Tom) Gast of White Bear Lake, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and 16 step-great grandchildren; as well as many loving nieces, nephews and honorary children.
