Karkela and Huber headed to state golf meet

The Perham girls golf team held a recognition banquet at Mulligan's on June 3. Kaylan Huber and Holly Karkela are heading to the Minnesota State High School League Girls Golf Tournament. The team placed second in section 8AA.4 / 4

It would have been a big surprise to not hear Holly Karkela and Kaylan Huber as two state meet participants from the results of the Section 8AA championship golf meet.

As the reigning conference champion, Karkela shot a two-over par 74 taking section medalist honors at Long Bow in Walker. She shot three under par on the back nine.

Huber advanced to state winning a playoff after finishing tied for seventh with Roseau's Emily Hallie, both shooting an 83.

As a team, Perham finished runners-up to Detroit Lakes, who carded a 335 to the Yellowjackets' 350.

Crookston was third with 353. Roseau fourth--356. Pelican Rapids fifth--373 and East Grand Forks placed sixth--374.

Karkela's 74 was good for a three shot victory over Crookston's Monica Wold. Trisha Hutchinson and Courtney Hedstrom, of Detroit Lakes, were third and fourth shooting 78 and 80, respectively. Abby Ness, Roseau, took fifth with an 81. DL's Matty Tschider sixth--82. Huber and Hallie rounded out the top eight with 83.

Other Perham scores: Ali Smith--94, Kari Cavanagh--99, Becca Heubsch--101, and Rachel Nelson--110.

Huber and Karkela, along with Dan Cavanagh from the boys team will travel to Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan, Minn., June 15-17 for the state meet.
