"Holly played a fantastic round," Head Coach Cory Solberg said. "It was truly fun to watch.

She will be joined, just like last season, by teammate Kaylan Huber, who qualified shooting an 84.

"Kaylan played tough as nails," Solberg said. "You can never count her out for anything; she is such a competitor."

Karkela's 78 was two strokes better than Kate Smith, of Detroit Lakes, who was the Heart O' Lakes medalist a fortnight ago.

"To be back-to-back section medalist in our section shows what a remarkable player she really is," Solberg said.

Trisa Hutchinson, of Detroit Lakes was third with a state qualifying score of 83. Emily Hallie, of Roseau qualified in fourth place shooting 82, along with Matty Tschider of Detroit Lakes.

The Lakers kept low scores coming. Courtney Hedstrom shot one better than Huber carding an 83 for sixth place. Huber was next with 84, one better than Monica Wold, of Crookston, who shot 85.

Wold was runner-up to Karkela at last season's section meet. Karkela defeated her by three strokes shooting 74.

As a team, the Yellowjackets finished runners-up to Detroit Lakes, like they did last year.

Detroit Lakes shot 328 as a team. Perham put up a 355, good for a tie with Roseau. The Yellowjackets were awarded second place based on a tiebreaker comparing team fifth player scores.

Crookston, 375, Park Rapids, 381 and Pelican Rapids' 393 rounded up the team scoring.

At last year's state tournament, Karkela shot a 162 for sole possession of seventh place and has a legitimate shot to win the tournament on a course where she has become accustomed to shooting well.

She finished 31st as a sophomore and 78th as an eighth-grader.

Huber will make her second consecutive trip to Ridges at Sand Creek, in Jordan, Minn. She ended day one at last year's tournament in 38th place shooting a day one score of 90 before missing a few putts in horrendously windy conditions day two, carding a 100 to place 55th.

Perham scores: Karkela 78; Huber 84; Rachel Nelson 94; Becca Huus 99; Destiny Mitchell 102; Ali Smith 104.

Team scores: DL 328; Perham 355; Roseau 355; Crookston 375; Park Rapids 381; Pelican Rapids 393.

State qualifiers: Holly Karkela 78; Kate Smith, DL 80; Trisa Hutchinson, DL 81; Emily Hallie, Roseau 82; Matty Tschider DL 82; Courtney Hedstrom DL 83; Kaylan Huber 84; Gracie Olson Roseau 85; Monica Wold, Crookston 85.
