BEMIDJI — ‘A Prairie Home Companion’ has a weekly audience of nearly 4 million, and on Nov. 9, roughly 300 of them will be listening live from downtown Bemidji.

Garrison Keillor, with cast and crew in tow, will take his longtime radio show to the Historic Chief Theater in downtown Bemidji for a live broadcast.

“It was a last minute choice, between New York, Portland, Birmingham, and Minneapolis, and we chose Bemidji,” Keillor said in an email to the Pioneer through a spokesperson. “It’s November, time to head north. And seeing as the show is only a month away, the Chief is easier to manage than the arena would be. And it’s deer-hunting season so everybody has other plans. The Chief will sound great on the radio.”

The last time Keillor made a stop in Bemidji, the performance was given in Bemidji State’s John Glas Fieldhouse with an estimated 3,000 fans in the audience.

“They try to do a show in greater Minnesota at least once a year,” said Kristi Booth, regional network director of Minnesota Public Radio. “They were excited about the Chief Theater and think it’s a great venue for the show.”

“The news from Lake Wobegon” can be heard 5 p.m. Saturdays on Minnesota Public Radio 91.3 FM and 88.5 FM and is also repeated at 11 a.m. Sundays on 91.3 FM.

The Bemidji live broadcast will start at 4:45 p.m.

Before heading up north, Keillor and crew will perform on Nov. 2 at the State Theatre in Minneapolis.

Tickets cost $40 and go on sale 10 a.m. Thursday. Tickets will be available for online purchase only at
