Rural Perham murder: Pipe wrench reportedly used in brutal killing of mother, son




Funeral services were held for Kenneth "Kenny" Romann, 91, of New York Mills, on June 2 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Corliss Township, rural Perham, with Pastor Phil Booe officiating. The hymns were sung by the congregation and accompanied by Karen Meyer. Pallbearers were Arlin Wanderi, Jay Leaderbrand, Neal Papenfuss, Scott Koennicke, Don Moberg and Duane Milbrandt. Military honors were provided by the Charles D. Center VFW Post #3289 of New York Mills, and the Minnesota Army National Guard, Honor Guard of Moorhead, Minn. Kenny was laid to rest in St. John's Cemetery, Corliss Township, rural Perham.

Kenneth Lloyd Romann was born on Jan. 30, 1922 at St. James Hospital, Perham, to Frank and Agnes (Omans) Romann. Kenny attended school at Perham Public School. He was baptized and confirmed at Perham Methodist Church. He served in the United States Army during the Second World War. Kenny worked as a semi driver for Otto Krueger Transfer, Ernie Poore Trucking and Muckala Silo Company. He was employed by Jack Nagle Sewer & Water Construction and C.L. Nelson Road Construction.

On Sept. 19, 1948, Kenny was united in marriage to Phyllis Walkington. They were blessed with four children, Keith, Larry, Kathryn and David. The family loved to travel and they spent many winters down south, where Kenny continued to operate heavy equipment in Florida and Texas. He enjoyed working on the shrimp and crab boats in the Gulf of Mexico. Kenny was an avid fisherman from down south to Canada, and north as far as Alaska for salmon and halibut; he especially loved the many lakes around Minnesota. Kenny was a devoted family man and loved to visit with everyone. On May 30, 2013, Kenny passed away at his home. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Preceeding Kenny in death were his parents; son, Larry; brothers, Alfred and Roy; and sister, Helen.

Kenny is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Phyllis; son, Keith (Betty Hofland) of Garfield, Minn., daughter, Kathryn (Paul) Fresonke of Cleveland, N.D. and son, David (Cheryl Papenfuss) of Perham; nine grandchildren, Patricia Gelling, Valerie Velde, Kevin Romann, Brent Wanderi, Lisa Wanderi, Greg Wanderi, Chad Wanderi, Mark Wanderi and Brian Romann; 16 great-grandchilden, Hunter Gelling, James Velde, Samuel Velde, Deven Wanderi, Deidrik Wanderi, Jeremiah Doll, Tyler Fisher, Lucas Fisher, Travis Preston, Hunter Wanderi, Beau Wanderi, Dylan Arnold, Renee Larson, Hannah Larson, Samantha Romann and Avery Romann; brothers, Wayne (Pearl) Romann of Perham and Dale (Joan) Romann of Brooklyn Center, Minn.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and countless friends.

Arrangements were provided by Karvonen Funeral Home, New York Mills. Online tributes may be posted at
