Kenneth Rimpila, 84, passed away peacefully on Nov. 19 at his home in New York Mills. Funeral services were held on Nov. 24 at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New York Mills with Pastor Ryan Stout officiating. The hymns were sung by the congregation and accompanied by Lina Belar. Pallbearers were Lucky Rimpila, Norman Bickford, Ron Ehnert, Greg Imsande, Jerauld Salathe and Jerry Vandermay. Military honors were provided by Charles D. Center VFW Post #3289 of New York Mills and Minnesota Army National Guard Honor Guard, Moorhead, Minn. Kenny was laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery, New York Mills.
Kenneth Fabian Rimpila was born on July 27, 1928 at home in Homestead Township, rural New York Mills. His parents were the late Fabian and Lena (Ehnert) Rimpila. Kenny grew up on the family farm in Homestead Township and attended country school at District #186 until the eighth grade. On July 11, 1949 Kenneth was united in marriage with Faith Ardis Rice in Grand Rapids, Minn. Kenny was inducted into the United States Army on Oct. 20, 1953 and was honorably discharged on Oct. 5, 1955. In 1956, Kenny and Faith purchased their own farm in Homestead Township where they farmed and raised their family.
Kenny enjoyed winter fishing on area lakes. He drove school bus for New York Mills District #553 and was the local gravedigger for many years. In 1984 Kenny and Faith retired from farming and moved into New York Mills, selling their family farm in 1987. During his retirement, Kenny enjoyed delivering newspapers for the New York Mills Herald. On Aug. 23, 2000 Faith passed away. Kenny resided at the Heritage Manor in New York Mills where he loved spending time with his grandchildren, visiting with family and friends, going on walks, watching the Minnesota Twins and was a big fan of New York Mills Eagles sports. He was also very involved in Relay For Life, where he was the co-chair in 2008. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Preceding Kenny in death were his parents, Fabian and Lena Rimpila; wife, Faith Rimpila; son, James Rimpila; and brother, Ben Rimpila.
Kenny is survived by his daughter, Judy (Lt. Col. "Skip") Shackelford of Colorado Springs, Colo.; son, Jeff (Toni) Rimpila of New York Mills; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Rimpila of New York Mills; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Roberts of Anchorage, Alaska; sisters-in-law, Faye Jaaska of New York Mills and Peg Rimpila of Hastings; brother-in-law, Francis (Florence) Rice of Nisswa, Minn.; many other relatives and a host of friends.
