KVRR-TV sports director pleads guilty to obstructing police, placed on leave
FARGO – The sports director for local Fox-affiliate KVRR-TV has been placed on leave for a week after pleading guilty Monday to obstructing police.
James Daniel Nelson, 28, read a prepared apology on-air during the 9 p.m. broadcast Tuesday night. The anchors said Nelson was suspended for a week and would return on Monday.
Nelson was arrested at 5:55 a.m. Sunday for obstructing police officers who were responding to an apparent assault at 4960 47th St. S., Sgt. Shannon Ruziska said.
“They were investigating what looked to be an assault, and he hindered their investigation,” said Ruziska, who added that Nelson was not involved in the assault.
“He was warned and didn’t heed the warning,” Ruziska said.
Nelson was charged with physical obstruction of government function, a Class A misdemeanor, and pleaded guilty Monday, according to online court records.
Judge Steven Marquart sentenced him to one year of unsupervised probation and $300 in fees.
Nelson was hired as KVRR’s sports director in September 2011.
