The Ladies Auxiliary along with VFW Post 4020, Perham is currently sponsoring both the Patriot Pen's and the Voice of Democracy Contest Programs in local schools and neighborhoods.
Both of these programs give students the opportunity to express their opinions on a patriotic theme and improve their writing and speaking skills while competing for worthwhile scholarship awards and prizes.
The theme for the Patriot's Pen Essay contest is "Are You Proud of Your Country?" The Patriot's Pen contest is open to students in grades 6-8, as well as home schooled students. The essay must be 300-400 type written words in length.
The Voice of Democracy theme is "Is There Pride in Serving In Our Military?" This contest is open to students in grades 9-12, as well as home schooled students.
The students must submit a recorded essay that is 3-5 minutes in length.
Both contests are judged at the local, district, and state levels. Awards are also given at those levels.
The deadline for both of these contests is Nov. 1. For more information and entry forms the students should contact the ITOW Museum, local schools, or call Nancy Schmitz at 346-5637.
