The Lady Eagles hung tight with a much more experienced Frazee volleyball squad in the season opener at New York Mills Tuesday night.

Frazee swept the match 3-0 with victories of 25-10, 25-16 and 25-13.

"Serve receive was what we struggled with the most," said Head Coach Amy Koskela.

Aside from senior Megan Cole, the only returning letterman from last year, nearly all of the other Eagles were making their first starting appearances on the varsity floor.

"I was surprised at how well my girls responded to being out on the court at varsity level for the first time. I know we have skills to improve and work on, but overall I'd say that we put up a decent fight for our age and experience."

Frazee fields a team of five seniors, four juniors and one sophomore compared to one senior, no juniors, six sophomores and four freshmen for Koskela's club.

Play was streaky, with games close midway before the experienced Hornets went on runs to pull away.

NY Mills closed to two points trailing 14-12 in game two before Frazee would rattle off 11 of the next 15 points.

Game three was tight early after the Hornets jumped out 5-0. NY Mills closed to 7-5 before another run led to a 25-12-match clincher.

Koskela has noted that wins and losses are not going to be a significant manner of measuring success for such a young team. She is looking for the building blocks to success and to a bright future as many of these young players gain valuable, varsity experience.

"I'm looking forward to what we can do by the end of the season and in the next two to three years."
