Lakers eliminate Jackets, 9-5
The rematch of last year's second round Section 8AA playoff matchup between Detroit Lakes and Perham ended similarly, with the Lakers knocking out the Yellowjackets 9-5.
"It was a tough way to end a great season," Head Coach Hans Hanson said. "This year's team were such a wonderful bunch to coach and to be around on a daily basis. We had success and hopefully enjoyed a fun spring. I want to wish the seniors best of luck with their future challenges."
DL is a good team that puts the ball in play and doesn't make many mistakes. We can't have that many walks in a game. That is what hurt us.
The Lakers were victors last year by a four-run margin, 5-1.
Detroit Lakes got on the board early capitalizing on four first-inning walks given up by Perham starter Jesse Hein.
Leadoff hitter Nate Baker scored on a walk to Brian Labat. Ryan Berg scored on a walk to Casey Fonder for an early 2-0 lead.
The Lakers blew the game open in the third inning scoring six runs and forcing Hein from the mound after 2 2/3 innings of work. He gave up six runs, four earned, on six hits; he walked five and struck out five. Hein's pitch count reached 80 pitches in less than three innings of work as Detroit Lakes' batters worked him deep in counts.
"DL is a good team that puts the ball in play and doesn't make many mistakes," Hanson said. "We can't have that many walks in a game. That is what hurt us."
Chris Ruther replaced Hein on the mound and was rudely welcomed by Connor McLeod, who launched a three-run shot over the fence in right-center to make it an 8-0 Laker lead.
The Lakers hit for the cycle, as a team, in the third inning. Casey Fonder singled; Kirk McLeod doubled; Baker hit the triple and Connor McLeod belted the home run.
In the bottom half of the third, Mac Link singled and eventually scored from second base on a double-play relay that sailed over first baseman Labat's head, allowing Link to trot to the plate.
Detroit Lakes answered in the fourth scoring their final run of the game. Casey Fonder reached on an error by Perham third baseman Eric Brauch. Fonder moved into scoring position on an infield single by Jon Gilson and scored on a single by DL pitcher Ben Galifus.
Galifus pitched a complete game for the victory. He allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits. He walked two Yellowjackets and struck out five.
Perham rallied late plating three runs in the fifth and one in the seventh.
Mark Schumacher led off with a single in the fifth and Mac Link was beaned on the next pitch putting runners on first and second with nobody out.
Successive fly-outs by Jordan Hein and David Altstadt left the job to catcher Gabe Pankonin, who singled to load the bases for clean-up slugger Jesse Hein.
A two-out two-RBI double by Hein scored Schumacher and Link to cut the DL lead to 9-3. Pankonin crossed home on a balk to make it 9-4.
Richard Hoffman ended the inning grounding out to second.
Altstadt took over pitching duties and held the Lakers off the board in the final three innings of work. He allowed only one hit, walked none and struck out three.
DL centerfielder Kyle Singer got the only hit off of Altstadt and moved to third, where he was stranded in the sixth.
Jordan Hein led off the seventh inning with a solo shot to center cutting the margin to 9-5, where it would stand.
The final out came on pinch hitter Ivan Nodsle's grounder to short. McLeod relayed to Baker at second to nab Hoffman.
The Yellowjackets finish the season with a mark of 16-6. The Lakers improve to 13-8 and move on to Tuesday's double elimination final four Section 8AA tournament in Park Rapids.
Game notes: Detroit Lakes played the game without four players, three of them starters, who were not dressed due to team rules violations.
