Lakes Area Gymnastics Academy hires former Yellowjacket Ashley Brasel as new director/head coach
PERHAM — A second former Yellowjacket will be taking a head coaching position for Perham gymnastics.
Earlier this year, Jenna Schmitz took over the high school team.
The Lakes Area Gymnastics Academy (LAGA) Board has hired Ashley Brasel as the new director/head coach for the LAGA program.
Brasel will be transitioning into the role over the next few months.
Brasel is a former Yellowjacket gymnast and is currently a coach at American Gold Gymnastics in Fargo, N.D. She remains committed to the American Gold Program through March, 2014. Beginning January 1, Brasel will share her expertise by assisting with developing lesson plans for current staff and gymnasts. Starting March 1, she will begin coaching, continue with supervision and will be fully on board as director/coach on April 1.
Brasel has an extensive and successful background in gymnastics. She began participating with the Perham program when it started in 1998 and was the first gymnast from PHS to win the State All-Around title as a sophomore. Brasel was a member of four state championship teams with the Yellowjackets. She was a coach with Lakes Area Gymnastics from 2002-2007 and been an optional coach and competitive optional coordinator for American Gold since 2008. Brasel is a National level coach, is safety and CPR certified and has a pro membership with USAG.
"Ashley has a great deal of dedication and enthusiasm for coaching young athletes and we are thrilled to have her as a part of our program," the LAGA board said in a letter to media and parents. "The present coaching staff will remain intact and provide stability as we move forward. Jenna Schmitz, Mike Peterson and John Lubitz are a part of the high school program and will be coaching the high school team during their season, which began in mid-November and continues through February.
"We are excited for the next chapter of Perham Gymnastics."
