LaVon L. Bakken, 68, of Waubun, died in her home on Saturday, June 21, 2008, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
LaVon Lorene DeGroat was born to Clifford and Marion (Murray) DeGroat on June 5, 1940 in White Earth. She was raised and attended school in Waubun. LaVon attended Minnesota State Community Technical College in Detroit Lakes and studied to be a chef. She married Raymond Bakken in 1959 and they made their home near Ponsford.
LaVon worked at the Chemical Dependency Unit and at the Circle of Life School in White Earth as a cook until the time of her retirement, due to her illness. LaVon after retirement served as a member of the elder advisors for the White Earth Tribal and Community College; she contributed to the community through her generous contribution of time, prayers and talent.
LaVon enjoyed growing flowers, fishing, going on picnics with her family and spending time helping people. She offered great support to her family and friends. LaVon had adopted many into her family; she was known to most as mom or grandma. She will be sadly missed by her family and those that knew her.
LaVon is survived by her husband, Raymond Bakken of Waubun; son Robert (Joann) Bakken of Waubun and adopted son, Steve Johnson of Waubun; daughters, Debra Ann Bakken of Waubun, Cleo (Steve) Parker of Kimball, Minn., and Rhoda Bakken of Callaway; an adopted brother, Paul Schultz of Waubun; 10 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; as well as several adopted children and grandchildren.
Preceding LaVon in death were her parents, Clifford and Marion; two brothers, Maurice and Larry; and a sister, Jean Maus.
Visitation will take place from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, with a 6 p.m. prayer service, at David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. It continues for one hour prior to the start of services at the church on Wednesday.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 25 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in White Earth, with the Rev. Mitch Byeck officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.
The David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes has been serving the family.
