Winners of the 2013 Perham Leadership Hall of Fame awards have been announced. Five recipients will be receiving awards at a banquet in their honor on Thursday, April 11. They include Jeff Morris, Jill Shipman, Linette Grismer, the Grandstand Committee and Catherine Drahmann. The awards, sponsored annually by the Perham Area Chamber of Commerce, will be presented in three categories: 1) Leadership Award; 2) Hall of Fame Award, and; 3) Volunteer of the Year Award (new this year). The banquet will be held at Stevelly’s (formerly Mulligan’s), with a social hour at 6 p.m., dinner following at 6:30 and awards starting at approximately 7:15. People who are unable to attend the meal are still invited to the awards ceremony. Friends and family of the recipients are especially encouraged to attend. Tickets are available from the chamber of commerce and cost $25 each, which includes a choice of chicken or steak. Contact Sherry at the chamber, at 346-7710, for tickets. Call between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., by Monday, April 8. LEADERSHIP AWARD Jeff Morris, who was named National Coach of the Year in 2012 for his champion cross country team. Morris has created the state’s premier cross country program, is a highly-acclaimed math teacher at Perham High School, and is a key leader of the school’s iPad initiative this school year. Grandstand Committee was formed in 2012. The 15-member committee planned, raised approximately $400,000 and oversaw construction of the Tuffy Grandstand, which was completed in time for the traditional Fourth of July baseball game and the fireworks display that followed. HALL OF FAME AWARD Jill Shipman has become synonymous with Kinship of the Perham Area, which has helped many area kids in need. Kinship acts as a matchmaker between a child who would benefit from an adult presence in his or her life, and adults who have time available to help a child. Kinship has produced uncountable success stories. VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Linette Grismer has worn so many volunteer hats that it’s hard to keep them straight. As a long-time nurse at the St. James Hospital (which became Perham Memorial, and then Perham Health) she became the finder/keeper of all sorts of hospital history. She was a long-time communion assistant at St. James, and has been highly involved at Pioneer Village for many years. She was one of the major organizers of the Perham All School Reunion – a two-year project. She has also been involved with the East Otter Tail History Museum for decades. Catherine Drahmann, who is 91 years old, has been involved with the Perham Public Library since she was 13. She was Perham’s first librarian, and as such coordinated the numerous volunteers who put in thousands of hours of library volunteer work over the years. She was secretary of the East Otter Tail Historical Society for many years, and has put in hours of volunteer work at the Pioneer Grounds. She has also been a volunteer at the East Otter Tail History Museum since its creation. She has worked with fellow historian Verona Larson on two hardbound East Otter Tail County history books, which were published in the 1970s and ‘80s.
