Legion Baseball: Buzz 3-1 after blowout win
Perham's Post 61 American Legion baseball team jumped out to an early lead Monday against Parkers Prairie at Al Krueger Field and never looked back in a 21-5 win.
The Buzz got one run in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch. They broke the game open in the second with seven runs. Gavin Biegler had a two-run single, followed by an RBI single by Brad Ellingson and a 2-run triple by Anthony Ruther.
The Buzz added another seven-run inning in the fifth, with a two-run double by Jake Kalina leading the way.
Trace Miller went six innings and allowed just five hits and one earned run to pick up the win.
Post 4020 swept Detroit Lakes in a pair of close games last Thursday at Krueger Field.
Shawn Stafki pitched a complete game, striking out 10 as the Buzz took game one, 3-2.
Perham scored three runs in the third with Shane Miller picking up a RBI hit. For the game, The Buzz managed just two hits, the other coming from Tyler Lynne.
Stafki allowed two runs in the seventh before shutting down the Lakers.
Ellingson hit a three-run homer in the first inning of game two and Perham had a 5-1 lead going into the fifth when Detroit Lakes exploded for five runs.
The Buzz came back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four times. One came in on a sac fly by Lynne, the other three jogged around the bases on a home run by Biegler.
Ellingson started on the mound for Perham and gave way to Lynne in the fifth inning. Lynne allowed two runs in the seventh, but held off D.L. to give the Buzz a 9-8 win.
The Buzz (3-1) will head to Detroit Lakes today (June 18) to go for the season sweep. After playing in their Wood Bat Tournament this weekend, Post 61 will host Moorhead in a doubleheader at Krueger Field on June 23. The first game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
Thief River Falls will be in Perham on June 25 for two games starting at 5 p.m.
Legion Wood Bat Tournament
The Perham Post 61 American Legion baseball team will be hosting their annual Wood Bat Tournament this weekend during Turtle Fest. Games will be played at Krueger Field and Matt's Field June 20-21.
Perham will take on Frazee in the opening game at Krueger Field at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Other teams in the tournament include: Fosston, Park Rapids, Pelican Rapids, Win-E-Mac, Red Lake County and D-G-F.
Games continue all day Saturday and resume Sunday at Noon with the 7th place game at Matt's Field and the 3rd place game at Krueger Field.
The Championship game will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Krueger Field with the 5th place game at Matt's Field, also at 2 p.m.
