Legion Baseball: Buzz 4th at home tourney
After a pair of rainouts last week, the Perham Buzz Post 61 American Legion team entered their annual Wood Bat Tournament after four days off.
It took the Buzz 10 innings, but they pulled out an 8-7 victory over Frazee in their first round game Saturday morning.
Brad Ellingson started the game for the Buzz, and pitched well until he hit a hurdle in the third inning. After giving up two singles, Ellingson struggled to find the strike zone. He walked two batters before giving way to reliever Tyler Lynne.
Lynne allowed a couple of inherited runners to score, but then settled down. Frazee scored six runs in the third, but Lynne then shut them down until the ninth inning.
Trailing 6-2, Perham scored twice in the fourth and again in the fifth before tying the game in the sixth on a RBI double by Lynne.
The game went to the ninth when Perham, playing as the visiting team in the tourney despite playing on their home field, finally took a 7-6 lead when Gavin Biegler drove in Shawn Stafki.
But Frazee took advantage of a Buzz error in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, 7-7.
In the 10th, Lynne led off with a double, was moved to third by a Jon Langlie ground out, and then scored on a Ben Brill sacrifice fly. Lynne shut down Frazee in the bottom of the 10th to pick up the win after eight innings of relief work.
Buzz lose in 2nd round
The Buzz ran into some trouble in their second game of the day Saturday, when Fosston beat them 4-1.
Taylor Doll took the loss for the Buzz, pitching all seven innings, giving up just four hits. One of those hits was from Anders Johnson, who hit four home runs over the weekend and was named the Offensive Player of the tournament.
The Buzz lone run came in the sixth inning, when Biegler scored on a Langlie ground out.
The Buzz managed just three hits in the game.
Buzz finish 4th
The Buzz finished fourth in their tournament on Sunday, with a loss to Red Lake County, 2-1.
It seemed that the wood bats were a problem for the Buzz, as they managed to get just two hits in the game.
Shawn Stafki took the loss for the Buzz, pitching five innings, allowing just five hits. Anthony Ruther pitched the final two innings. Ruther and Biegler each had a single for the Buzz.
In the championship of the tournament, Pelican Rapids beat Fosston, 1-0, in a 5-inning rain-shortened game.
Buzz vs Moorhead
Ruther hit a three-run homer and Ellingson had a two-run walk-off homer as Perham took game one against Moorhead on Tuesday, 12-10.
Biegler went 3-for-4 with three runs scored as Perham swept the Blues by winning game two, 8-3.
Perham will host Thief River Falls today (June 25) for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. before taking a week off until they play Fergus Falls on July 2.
