Legion Baseball: Buzz snap losing streak

After losing eight-straight games, Perham's Post 61 American Legion baseball team finally got one back in the win column by taking their final game at the Marshal Tournament over the weekend.

The Buzz had dropped three-straight league doubleheaders heading into the tournament, then lost their first two in Marshall.

In the first round, they lost to the host team, Marshall, 4-3. Anthony Ruther took the loss on the mound, pitching 1 2/3 innings in relief of Brad Ellingson, who pitched the first five.

Perham took a 3-2 lead into the seventh when Marshall rallied for two runs. The game-winning run was forced in by a bases loaded walk, which followed a strike out where the batter reached first when strike three got past he catcher.

Ruther added two doubles at the plate. Shane Miller and Gavin Biegler were both 2-for-4 as well. Andrew Muer added a RBI double.

The Buzz tried to turn it around in the second game of the Marshall tournament, but dropped another tight game, 7-6, to Millard (NE).

Taylor Doll pitched all seven innings for the Buzz, taking the loss.

Perham had a 4-3 lead going into the fourth when Millard scored four runs. Post 61 put up single runs in the fifth and sixth, but had a final rally stopped in the seventh when a runner was caught stealing and a pair of strikeouts to end the game.

Biegler had a double and triple and Shawn Stafki added two hits for the Buzz. Ben Brill was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Buzz recover to take 7th

Perham went against another team from Nebraska in the final game of the tournament. They finished seventh in Marshall with a 10-8 win over Waterloo.

Stafki got the win on the mound, pitching all seven innings for the Buzz. He had allowed just three runs through before giving up five over the final two innings. Only five of the eight runs were earned and Stafki finished with six strikeouts.

The Buzz did all of their scoring in the first three innings, with four-straight hits to start the game. They added two in the second and four more in the third.

Biegler finished the tournament going 7-for-12 after a three-hit game against Waterloo. Brill added a three-run double as Perham pounded out 12 hits.

Buzz swept at GR

Perham capped a two-day road trip last week by getting swept in Grand Rapids.

The Buzz entered the seventh inning of game one with a 5-4 lead, but ended the inning losing by a walk off home run. After a quick out, a walk and a stolen base put the tying run on second for Grand Rapids. After an error allowed one run to score, the next batter hit a two-run walk off home run.

Doll took pitched a complete game, put took the loss for Perham, allowing five earned runs while striking out four. Brill was 2-for-2 with three RBI for Post 61. Stafki was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored.

Perham managed just five hits in game two as Grand Rapids completed the sweep, 7-3.

Stafki took the loss on the mound, pitching three innings, giving up four earned runs. Brill led the offense again, going 2-for-3.

Canceled at PR

Perham's scheduled game at Pelican Rapids on Monday, July 13 was canceled. No make-up date was announced.

The Buzz hit the road again today (July 16) as they play in Moorhead against the Blues at Mattson Field. Post 61 will finish off their regular season with a make-up doubleheader at Detroit Lakes July 21.

The Division I District 9 Tournament is in Thief River Falls July 22-26.
