Legion Baseball: Buzz split doubleheader with Blues

PERHAM — Josh Still outdueled Moorhead Blues starter Brandon Porter in a tight opening game of an American Legion baseball doubleheader Thursday at Krueger Field in a 4-3 victory for the Perham Buzz. Moorhead won the second game 3-0 to earn the split.

Luke Sailer broke a three-all tie in game one with a two-out single to score Griffin Helmeke from second base with the game-winner in the home half of the sixth.

Helmeke reached base two of three appearances in the game with a single and on a fielder’s choice. He stole two bases and led Perham in scoring crossing the plate both times he was on the bags.

The Blues opened the scoring in the first inning taking a 2-0 lead on a two-out base hit by Austin Skjefte. Jason England and Zach Schroeder scored.

Perham answered with a run in the first and took the lead in the second inning when Helmeke and Sailer both scored. The duo combined for a productive game batting in the seven and eight positions of the order

Sailer was 1-2, and reached on an error, stole a base and scored in the game.

CJ Mulcahy tripled and scored Perham’s first run on a two-out RBI single from Jack Stigman.

All seven runs in the game were scored with two-out in a battle of key hitting between both clubs.

Mulcahy was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with two singles and a triple, along with one RBI. Still, Stigman, JT Laughlin, Helmeke, Sailer and Joey Lindberg all had one hit each.

The Blues tied the game at three in the top of fourth.

Jake Erholtz reached on an error, stole second and scored when Preston Kraiter singled and the ball got away from Mulcahy at the plate on a throw from Helmeke in right field.

Still held the Blues to five hits.

Skjefte led Moorhead going 1-3 with the pair of RBIs.

Still pitched a complete game of seven innings. Two of the three runs allowed were earned. He fanned, walked and hit one batter.

Perham had four errors on defense in the game.

Porter took the loss throwing six innings, allowing four runs, all earned. He struck out four and walked two.

Drew Anderson and Jared Benson each had two hits in the second game for Moorhead as the Blues salvaged a split. Brandon Weiser and Tanner Swenson combined on the two-hit shutout.

Benson was also hit by a pitch twice in Game 2, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances in the 3-0 win for the Blues (13-21).
