Legion: No. 4 Alexandria blows out No. 8 Detroit Lakes
PERHAM — A confident No. 4 Alexandria Post 87 ballclub batted around the order the first three innings in a 14-0 blowout of No. 8 Detroit Lakes in championship quarterfinal play at the Minnesota Sub State 14 American Legion baseball tournament at Krueger Field.
“I’m confident in our guys and think we have everything we need to win the tournament,” Head Coach Jake Munsch said. “We still have to go out and execute. We’re good on paper but paper can burn quick.”
Thursday’s hero Blake Stockert scored in each of his first three plate appearances at the leadoff position, including his second home run of the tournament.
First baseman Toby Helgeson and starting pitcher Mitch Thompson in the three and cleanup positions also scored in each of their first three plate appearances.
Travis Krueger had a two-RBI single to score Helgeson and Thompson in the first inning and Krueger scored to cap scoring in the first frame at 4-0 Alexandria.
Casey Hammerback, batting in the two hole, joined Stockert, Helgeson and Thompson scoring in the second inning to push the rout to 8-0.
All four scored in the third inning, along with Parker Revering to push past the 10-run mercy rule to 13-0 after three innings.
Alexandria added an unearned run in the sixth inning for the 14-0 final.
Detroit Lakes was outhit 15-4 and managed only two hits after a double and single in the first inning. Detroit Lakes also left the bases loaded in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings stranding a dozen runners.
Helgeson was 3-3 at the plate with three runs to lead Alexandria. Krueger was 3-5 with three RBIs.
Thompson picked up the victory throwing four innings, allowing three hits, two walks and he struck out four.
Sam Voz takes the loss allowing 11 runs, seven earned on nine hits in two innings pitched. He issued three walks.
Alexandria has won 15 of 17 games to improve to 24-10 on the year and will play the winner of Friday’s nightcap No. 3 Perham versus No. 7 Fergus Falls. The loser will face Moorhead to start Saturday’s play at 10 a.m.
In loser’s bracket play earlier in the day, No. 1 Moorhead eliminated No. 5 Thief River Falls 11-2. Bemidji stayed alive with a 6-4 victory over East Grand Forks.
Detroit Lakes will play Bemidji Saturday at 1 p.m. in an elimination game.
