Lena Gruis, 94, of the Nevis area, died Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids.

She was born April 27, 1915 in Sweet Township, Pipestone County, to John and Katherine (Pulscher) Freese. During her childhood, she moved with her family to various states. She attended country school through the eighth grade in Pipestone County. Following her schooling, she gained employment with a minister, Mr. Rossiter and his wife in Pipestone County, where she did domestic work.

She married Willard Gruis on Sept. 2, 1937. She and her family made their home on a farm in Pipestone County until 1940 when they moved to the Nevis area. They farmed there until 1942 when they returned to Pipestone County following the death of her father-in-law. In the fall of 1944, they again returned to the farm in the Nevis area where they remained until 1949 when they moved to a larger farm in the Nevis area.

She and her family joined Riverside United Methodist Church on March 20, 1954. She was an active member, serving in the women's circle and also ran the church kitchen for many years. Her husband died on July 3, 1981. She remained on the family farm until 2002 when her health required her to move to the Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids.

She is survived by three children: Darrel (Janet), of Nevis, David (Gail), of Park Rapids, and Jean (Timothy) Lindow, of Shevlin; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one great-grandson, Scott Gartner; and eight brothers and sisters.

Casket bearers: Daniel DeCrans, Leo Gartner, Micheal Gruis, Dwaine McCullion, Delmer Hacker and Bill Ladely.

Funeral service: 11 a.m. Monday, June 15 at Riverside United Methodist Church in Park Rapids with Rev. Don Bird officiating. Linda Szuszitzky will be the organist. Congregational hymns will be "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden."

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday, June 14 at Jones-Pearson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Interment: Greenwood Cemetery, Park Rapids.
