Lester M. Haugen, 91, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes.

Lester M. Haugen was born to John and Carrie (Oien) Haugen on May 15, 1917 in Lake Eunice Township, where he grew up and attended District 78 country school. He worked on the family farm and also worked for neighboring farmers. He then served in the United States Army from 1942-46, stationed in England and Germany.

Following his discharge from the Army, Lester moved to Detroit Lakes, where he worked for Blanding's Department Store in the hardware department. He later became general manager of that department. On Nov. 10, 1956, he married Anna E. Hahn in Philadelphia, Pa. They made their home in Detroit Lakes. In 1966 Lester started working for U.S. West Telephone in Detroit Lakes, in the maintenance department. He retired from there in 1988.

Lester was an active member of First Lutheran Church and then Faith Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, serving on several boards. He was also a member of the Brown Baggers. He loved woodworking and gardening.

Lester also had a real love for children. Over the years he and his wife provided a foster home for over 40 children. They were the first couple from Becker County to receive the Minnesota Foster Parents of the Year award. Lester was always willing to help others with whatever they needed.

Surviving Lester are his wife, Anna; one sister, Florence Gilbertson of Detroit Lakes; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding Lester in death were his parents; six brothers, Elmer, Edwin, Oscar, Alfred, Maynard and Ernest Haugen; six sisters, Lena Mitchell, Olga Mitchell, Clara Matson, Mabel Haack, Mae Gilbertson and Alice Haugen.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at the West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Faith Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Paul Larson officiating.

Casket bearers will be Marlin Haugen, Jeffrey Haack, John Haack, Douglas Schultz, Mark Gilbertson, LaDean Nichols and Paul Iverson. Burial will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, rural Audubon.
