Letter to the Editor: ‘Armed with hope, to finish the fight’
The theme chosen for this year’s East Otter Tail County Relay For Life is, “armed with hope, to finish the fight.”
This optimistic statement, unimaginable a generation ago, mirrors the mood of the event – we really have a lot to celebrate!
The American Cancer Society event really begins the week before the relay, with the annual “Paint the Town Purple” celebration: relay participants, along with the help of local merchants and citizens, decorate homes and businesses with purple ribbons, banners and signs. Purple is the color that symbolizes cancer survivors. The proliferation of purple honors the ever-increasing number of local survivors.
Relay Week will begin locally on Monday, July 7 with a Survivor’s Dinner. The meal is free to all cancer survivors (any person who has received a diagnosis of cancer, is being treated, or who has survived for many years).
The dinner will be at Wild Oaks restaurant, at Lakeside Golf Course in Perham. All other guests are welcome – both care receivers and the general public – for $15, the cost of the dinner. A social hour, introduction of 2014’s honorary co-chairpersons, special awards and a featured speaker are part of the night’s program.
Invitations for the dinner will be sent out soon. Survivors who do not receive invitations, and new survivors who may not yet be on the list, should call Judy Kunza at 346-4714, Leroy Wegscheid at 367-2571 or Lisa Peterson at 346-4747.
Although our relay is only a month away, it’s not too late to form a team. Teams are the heart of a successful relay, and the more we have, the better the event.
Any group – friends, businesses, churches, clubs or other organizations – can form a team and be part of the “war against cancer.” Individuals who would like to be part of this special night are welcome; just call, and we will find a team for you.
Information about our Relay For Life event, including teams, fundraising events, videos of last year’s relay, and more can be found at www.relayforlife.org/ottertaileastmn.
The public is also invited to join our progress in the fight against cancer on this special night, Friday, July 11 at the Perham High School track.
