Lien earns certificate in holistic medicine
A doctor at the Perham Health New York Mills Clinic has earned a special certification in the art and science of integrative holistic medicine.
This winter, Sonja Lien, MD, along with 170 other physicians, became a Diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM). Her status as an Diplomate signifies that she has undergone a process of education in integrative holistic medicine. The ABIHM curriculum includes a broad array of topics, and Diplomates have an expansive command of integrative holistic concepts and practices. ABIHM Certification is a powerful tool. Patients can be assured that a certificated physician has met a validated standard of knowledge of integrative holistic medicine. The goal of the ABIHM is to train and certify physicians to work in collaboration with patients, seeing each person in his or her wholeness and helping each patient to achieve optimal health. As of December 2012, the ABIHM had certified 1,800 physicians. “I believe coming up with the best treatment plan for a patient should be a dual effort,” said Dr. Lien. “I want input from my patients on which treatment options they think will work best in their situations, utilizing options from integrative – both conventional and complementary – medicine.” Lien added that care options may include many integrative modalities, such as acupuncture, mind-body medicine, and others. Her special areas of interest include biofeedback, integrative cancer care, integrative care in chronic diseases such as diabetes, and also nutritional medicine and natural medicine. Lien earned her medical degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Prior to joining Perham Health, she completed her residency in family medicine at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.
