Local Relay for Life team recruitment meeting to be held on Monday at Perham High School

One can depend on it; the first week of spring begins the planning for the East Otter Tail Relay for Life event. The process begins with inviting all teams - new and old - to send a representative to the "kick-off" meeting at the Perham High School at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 29.

"Our community can be proud of our Relay's past successes," comments Lisa Peterson, event chairperson. "We have been among the leaders for counties our size for our success in raising money for fighting cancer. We also have more fun doing the event than anyone else too." She continues, "Last year was our 15th annual event, and we had our biggest, best relay ever. We exceeded all of our goals except one. We always aim to have 35 teams at the relay. We have come close to this, but never have had 35. Help us make this goal in 2010!"

Relay team recruitment chair, Jim Stenger, is excited about their chances of finally reaching this goal, and he has already recruited a couple of new teams. "We have always had good team retention; at least three teams have been a part of all 15 relays and are coming back for another year. Generally, we get 90 percent of our teams back, which is truly remarkable and a credit to our caring community," says Jim. "Join us! If you are thinking of starting a team or are just curious about our event, come to the meeting on Monday. You'll get coffee and bars and an explanation of how to organize an effective team. We may even have door prizes." Jim requests that all the "old teams" send their team captain or a team representative to this meeting.

Jim and Lisa emphasize that any group of eight or more can organize a team. This team may be a group of friends wanting to join the battle against cancer, members of a church, club or civic organization, school teams, teams representing a business, family or neighborhood teams. The variety of teams makes the night exciting and meaningful. This year's Relay for Life is at the Perham High School Track on Friday, July 9.
