A 'Looney' weekend in Vergas, powwow in Pine Point and more
The folks in Vergas are getting a little "looney" this weekend, as the town hosts its annual Looney Daze celebration from now through Sunday.
Saturday's events include a Methodist Church Flea Market and Kids' Fishing Tournament both starting at 8 a.m., 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m., Street Fair starting at 9:30, Kittenball Tournament and Fire Department Open House both starting at 10 a.m., Minnesota Zoomobile at noon, Road Rally at 1 p.m., Loon Claling Contest at 2 p.m., and a full day of live entertainment.
The music starts at 1 p.m. with the Beat Goes On, followed by Blue Barry & Jazzy Frank at 3 p.m., David Lee at 6 p.m. and the Fat Cats at 8 p.m., which is also when the street dance starts.
On Sunday, the fun resumes with a Classic Car & Motorcycle Show at 9 a.m., Outdoor Church Service at 10 a.m., Classic Car & Motorcycle Parade at 1 p.m. and Looney Daze Parade at 2 p.m. The grand parade will be followed by the Strong Man/Sheef Toss Contest and Water Fights. The day's events conclude with an 8 p.m. raffle drawing at Billy's Corner Bar.
Also this weekend, Pine Point hosts its annual Powwow. Join the community for a weekend of traditional Native American dancing, crafts, food and music.
Saturday's festivities begin with the Joe Bush Memorial 5K Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m., followed by a flag raising ceremony at 10 a.m.
Grand Entry for the powwow performers is at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday. This year, there will be a featured performance by the Margaret Smith family, performing "Old Style Jingle Dress."
A community feast gets underway at 5 p.m., and there will also be a White Earth Princess and Brave contest.
Sunday's festivities begin with a second flag raising ceremony at 10 a.m., followed by the final Grand Entry at 1 p.m.

Also on Sunday, the Becker County Museum hosts an opening reception for its latest traveling exhibit from the Minnesota Historical Society, "Minnesota on the Map," starting at 3 p.m. This exhibit, which runs through Sept. 30, will showcase the mapping of our state, from surveying to cartography to roads and railroads.
