Lund Mania returns July 6 - this time with 'Boatville Drags'
New York Mills - the home of Lund Boats - will host its annual Lund Mania events on Friday, July 6 this year.
New activities added to the schedule stay true to Lund Mania's boat and fishing theme.
One such activity is the "Boatville Drags" - a race of miniature Lund pedal boats down the street in front of City Hall.
Kenny and Josie Hendrickx, who help plan Lund Mania activities, have been trying for the last couple of years to figure out how to include boat races.
After tossing around many ideas, Kenny figured, "Who says we've got to have water to have boat races?"
And thus came the pedal boat idea.
Luke Becker, the shop metal teacher at the high school, took four miniature Lund boats and installed small bikes inside of them. He began the process with his students during the school year, and completed the boats last week.
Between 4:30-5:30 p.m. in front of City Hall, area business men and women will be racing the pedal boats for a chance to win a traveling trophy.
The Fourth Annual Lund Mania Fishing Tournament, held on Otter Tail Lake from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. is full for the first time, with 50 teams.
"We had to turn teams away, " Al Berube said, who put the tournament together.
The teams, including many pros, will be competing in the catch, record and release program for a chance to win one of three Lund boats. Spotters are still needed to ride with the teams and record catches.
Several family-friendly events are planned for the afternoon in NY Mills, including a Free Swim Day at the community pool from 1-5 p.m., a classic car show and antique tractor show from 2-6 p.m., a sailboat regatta from 2-5 p.m., a petting zoo and free pony rides from 4-7 p.m., and a parade at 7 p.m.
Most activities will be held in a blocked-off section downtown, or behind the NY Mills Regional Cultural Center.
There will also be other kids' games, food vendors (including a fish fry by the Eagles Café') and other events going on all day. A street dance will be held that evening.
