Lyle George Mickelson

Lyle George Mickelson, 73, of Frazee, MN passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side under the special care of Red River Valley Hospice. His funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 28, at Bethany Lutheran Church, rural Menahga, MN. Interment was in the Bethany Lutheran Cemetery.

Lyle was born November 16, 1935, to Julius "Jay" and Betty (Torkelson) Mickelson. He grew up on a farm in Spruce Grove Township near Wolf Lake, MN and attended District #75 Grade School and Frazee High School. Lyle was an active member of the Boy Scouts, and after high school he joined the National Guard. On August 28, 1955, he married Jeannette Wacker at Bethany Lutheran Church in rural Menahga. The couple had three children. He and Jeannette were engaged in farming and the turkey business their entire working lives. In 1996, Lyle semi-retired and moved to Big Toad Lake. Faith, family, and community service were all very important to Lyle. He was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church where he was baptized December 8, 1935, confirmed July 9, 1950, and held various leadership positions throughout his life. Lyle helped organize the Wolf Lake Rescue Team. He played an integral role in establishing the Wolf Lake Lions Club in which he was a charter member. He received a variety of community service awards including the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 1987, and along with his wife, Jeannette, the Valley Farmer and Homemaker Award in 2008. Spending time with family and friends was a favorite pasttime of Lyle's. He was an active participant in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and would often attend their school and sporting events. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, music, dancing, and grilling a good steak. Spring field work and harvest were favorite seasons of Lyle's.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Jeannette; his brother, Harold (Sandy) Mickelson; his children, Tom (Jill) Mickelson of Frazee, Barb (Lamarr) VanDame of Fargo, Kevin (Linda) Mickelson of Perham; his grandchildren, Phillip (Anastasia) Mickelson, Jamie (Mike) Johnson, Alex (Melissa) Mickelson, Sally Mickelson, Kyle Mickelson, Katie VanDame, Brooke Mickelson, and Hannah VanDame; his great-grandchildren, Olivia, Jack, and Weston Mickelson, Reed, Carter, Claire, and Parker Johnson, Grayce, Ryleigh, and Chandler Mickelson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald, in 1955; and his sister, Dorothy (Lloyd) Ramsay, in 1978; his mother in 1979; and his father in 2000. To leave online condolences, please visit
