Mable Elsie Oja
Mable Elsie Oja, 83, of Osage, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009 at her home on Straight Lake.
She was born Oct. 1, 1925 on a farm near New York Mills to Emil and Lillian (Wiirre) Kallinen. She attended country school through the eighth grade and then attended New York Mills High School, graduating in 1943.
She moved to Chicago, Ill., and worked at a WWII defense plant for several years. Later, she returned to Minnesota where she worked in the office at the downtown Dayton's store.
She married Lyle Byron Oja on Aug. 4, 1946 in New York Mills. They had one daughter.
The young couple moved to Chicago. Later they made their home in Minneapolis, Redwood Falls and Littleton, Colo., before settling in Osage in 1991. For 18 years, she worked as an accountant for the Ace Hardware Store in Englewood, Colo.
She was an active part of St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary. She was one of the first female members of the Osage Lions Club. She was a member of the Minnesota Finnish-American Historical Society and the Osage Ladies. She was also an auxiliary member of both the Otto Hendrickson American Legion Post 212 in Park Rapids and the VFW.
She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids where she served on the altar guild.
She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Genia, of Sedalia, Colo.; two grandchildren; a special niece, Diane Newstrom, of Cross Lake; a sister, Mildred Jusczak, of Moose Lake; two brothers: Merlin (Alice) Kallinen of Silver Bay, and Milton (Joanne) Kallinen, of Kansas City, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers: Melvin, Merville and Martin.
Casket bearers: Shane Anderson, David Feldt, Lenny Buckentin, Todd Newstrom, and Stanley and Paul Myllykangas.
Honorary casket bearers: Members of the Osage Lions Club.
Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Funeral service: 11 a.m. today (Saturday), Jan. 24 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids, with Rev. Ken Nyhusmoen officiating. The organist will be Roz Pederson.
Interment: Wolf Lake Cemetery.
