The New York Mills Babe Ruth 14-15's baseball team stared a first defeat in the eyes and did not even blink scoring four runs in their last at-bats to defeat Vergas 5-4. They remain undefeated at 12-0.

"Sometimes good teams get lucky," the field umpire said exiting the field.

Luck was certainly in NY Mills' favor.

Nick Kupfer started off the rally with a lazy fly ball to left that somehow eluded the left fielder's glove. A pop to the pitcher and strikeout left Kupfer standing on second base with two out. The potential tying run, Austin Erickson, was close to home but in the on-deck circle.

"I told every hitter that nobody makes an out and we will win the game and we did just that," Head Coach Tim Kupfer said.

Taylor Ericksrud belted a single between first and second bringing Kupfer home. Ericksrud would advance to second on a past ball.

Erickson worked the count full before reaching first on a walk and both he and Ericksrud would move into scoring position on another past ball.

Brandon Kupfer came to the plate needing a base hit to tie the game. He laced a sinking fly to right field. The defender appeared to have a bead on the ball but was forced to dive to make the catch.

The ball, which should have been the final out of the game, deflected off the end of his glove scoring both runners and Kufper's single turned into a triple after the two-base error.

One hit, three past balls and two outfield errors; that does not happen often.

Tyler Patron worked the count to 3-1. Kupfer, 90-feet away, raced home on the next pitch, yet another past ball, for the winning run in a wild finish.

NY Mills 10, Vergas 0

The opening game of the doubleheader was a different story. Brandon Kupfer faced the minimum number of 12 batters on way to a perfect game.

"Brandon went out in the first game and threw strikes and kept the ball low all game," Coach Kupfer said.

The typical five-inning game was ended one inning short as the offense kicked into gear scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to ten-run Vergas.

Kupfer struck out three and walked none. In four innings of work, the count never reached full and not one Vergas batter touched a base.

The defense behind Kupfer made three difficult plays look routine to keep the game perfect.

Tyler Patron made a tough backhand stab on a hard grounder to first base and made the play unassisted.

Second baseman Ericksrud had five assists, two of which could have easily gotten through him.

NY Mills was again aided by errors in the last inning. Four past balls, a bean ball and three errors complimented a single by Nick Kupfer and a 2 RBI double by Keaton Norton. Norton's double was the final play of the game.
