Man faces felony for trying to steal from family member
A 56-year-old man caught breaking into an extended family member’s home in Vergas has been charged with felony burglary in the first degree.
The man, Wayne Alvin Archer of Detroit Lakes, allegedly entered the home without permission and rummaged through drawers and cabinets in a downstairs den and upstairs bedroom.
A woman was inside the lower level of the house at the time of the burglary, according to Otter Tail County Court administration records. She overheard someone rummaging around and called her son to say she was being burglarized. The son then called 911.
Archer was arrested while the burglary was in progress, at 11:30 p.m. Jan. 10. The residence is located along Highway 4 in rural Vergas.
Law enforcement arrived at the scene just as the woman’s husband was getting home. The couple recognized Archer as an extended family member.
According to court records, Archer admitted to law enforcement that he went upstairs and found an envelope with $85 in it, in a drawer. He was charged in district court on Jan. 13 and his next court appearance has been scheduled for Monday, Jan. 27.
