Man hospitalized after Moorhead rest-area stabbing
A Roman, Mont., man is hospitalized at Innovis Health in Fargo after being stabbed at the Moorhead I-94 rest area early Sunday afternoon.
The victim, Dale Morigeau, 51, underwent surgery Sunday for multiple stab wounds after being attacked by Harmit Bhangu, 32, of Chestermere, Alberta, Canada. Hospital officials are not releasing details on Morigeau's condition.
At 1:37 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a 911 call from a woman at the rest area, located about half-mile east of Moorhead. Two officers happened to be in the area and arrived at the scene while the stabbing was in progress. According to WDAY television, Bhangu was using a common lock-blade knife to stab Morigeau in his head and body.
Several witnesses had secured themselves in another room as the two officers ordered Bhangu to surrender, according to a Moorhead Police Department news release. Bhangu finally dropped his knife but had to be subdued with a Taser.
Second-degree felony assault charges will be requested against Bhangu, who is in custody at the Clay County Jail, according to a Moorhead Police Department news release.
Police investigators were interviewing Bhangu and witnesses Sunday evening and would not reveal any more details about the incident. According to WDAY, police believe the two men were strangers.
The rest area remained closed until 10 p.m. Sunday.
