Man loses consciousness, pulse after shallow dive on Otter Tail Lake

A man who dove into shallow water on Otter Tail Lake on the Fourth of July has been life-flighted to a hospital near the Twin Cities.

Gene Erickson, age 35, of Breckenridge, Minn., dove head-first off a dock on the east side of the lake into water that was approximately 3-feet deep, according to a press release from the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.

A witness noticed that Erickson was unconscious after the dive and brought him to shore.

The release states that Erickson became alert for a short period of time, then became short of breath, stopped breathing and lost his pulse. Bystanders performed CPR, restoring his pulse and breathing. He was then transported by Perham Ambulance, and later taken by life-flight to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, Minn.

Details of his condition were unknown as of Monday morning.
