The "Scootin' to the Next Level" trans-Minnesota scooter marathon will be launched April 22 in Moorhead.

Perham's Mark Schmidt has been planning the pledge trip for the Make-A-Wish Foundation for over a year.

He is expected to make it to Perham on his foot-powered scooter by late Thursday. That will be the first leg of a ten day journey that will end in the Twin Cities metro area.

A ceremonial scoot on Perham's Main Street is scheduled for the second day about 9 a.m. Perham students will be let out of school, and a large crowd is expected to cheer him through town. The Perham procession will start at about the Veterans Museum; continuing to the Service Foods intersection; then on County Road 8 to the Highway 10 intersection.

New York Mills students will also be cheering encouragement to Schmidt, when he passes the school at an estimated time of 11:30 a.m. Friday morning. His goal is to reach Target Field by May 1-a distance of about 230 miles.

Schmidt is one of the founders of the local Dreams for Kids group, which hosts an annual motorcycle run, Harley Davidson raffle, and other activities to raise money for Make-A-Wish.

Make-A-Wish Foundation of Minnesota grants approximately 230 wishes each year across the state of Minnesota.

Schmidt's goal is to raise at least $6,000 for Make-A-Wish-which is about the cost of each "wish" granted by the foundation. The first wish will be awarded to Taylor, a 15-year-old from Monticello who suffered burns over 80 percent of her body.

The scooter trek has garnered widespread publicity. The Perham Lions, of which Schmidt is a member, is sponsoring the scooter run, and the fundraiser has picked up support and endorsements from Lions Clubs all along the route.
