Marriage license applications now available for same-sex couples
Same-sex couples are now able to fill out applications for marriage licenses in Otter Tail County.
A representative from the county recorder’s office said the applications became available earlier this month, but no same-sex couples had applied as of Monday.
Couples will need to wait until August 1 to pick up their official license, the date when same-sex marriage becomes legal in Minnesota.
The new applications look almost exactly like the current version, with the notable exception that the words “bride” and “groom” have been replaced with “applicant one” and “applicant two.”
The current “bride” and “groom” version will be available until August 1, when all couples will use the new form.
The recorder’s office created the new application ahead of the law change. There is no statewide standard for marriage license applications.
The process and cost of applying for a marriage license in Otter Tail County has not changed, according to the recorder’s office. Marriage licenses cost $115, and there is a 5-day waiting period. That fee is reduced to $40 if certain requirements are met by the couple.
