Donna Gill, of Perham, was recently honored for serving 30 years as a Master Gardener in East Otter Tail County.

Upon receiving her certificate at a Jan. 13 Master Gardener meeting in Perham, Gill said, “The Master Gardeners in East Otter Tail County have been making a difference for over 30 years. They have been sponsoring educational events such as the annual Horticultural Days .”

Carol Rethemeier and Mary Dertinger were also recognized, for 10 and 15 years of service as Master Gardeners, respectively.

The Master Gardeners have been working on projects such as the 4-H Children’s Garden at the local fairgrounds since 2006. There are about 25 children learning about growing and eating fresh vegetables every summer.

Also, the Courtyard of Caring at Perham Living, a project of the Master Gardeners, enhances the lives of residents and staff with its colorful flowers and other plants.

Perham’s city parks have also benefited from the many hours Master Gardeners have given to beautify the area.

East Otter Tail County Master Gardeners are often asked to teach classes at other county’s events, due to their level of expertise. During the growing season, Master Gardeners may be reached by contacting the Extension Office in New York Mills.

There are currently about 40 local people who are qualified as Master Gardeners. They meet monthly.
