Mathias "Matt" Richard Winkels, 89, of Perham, died on Nov. 29 at Perham Living. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 3, beginning at 11 a.m. at St. Henry's Catholic Church in Perham. Visitation will be Monday, Dec. 2, from 5-8 p.m. with parish prayers at 7 p.m. at Schoeneberger Funeral Home in Perham and also one hour prior to the funeral mass at the church on Tuesday. Burial will take place in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Perham.

Matt was born on Feb. 9, 1924 at St. James Hospital in Perham to Mathias and Sarah (Silbernagel) Winkels. He attended school in Dent, and at the age of 16, started working at Schoeneberger Furniture Store and Funeral Home. He worked there for 35 years. The business later became Perco Home Center and Matt managed the floor covering division starting in 1971. In 1981, Matt began Winkels Carpet Center. He retired in 1989 and he and his wife Margaret also owned and managed Riverside Tent and Trailer Camp. Matt served in World War II from 1943-1946 in Germany. On July 12, 1957 Matt was united in marriage to Margaret Sonnenberg at St. Henry's Catholic Church in Perham.

Matt was a patient, kind, and loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed horses, restoring antique Ford cars and Ford tractors, spending time with family, deer hunting, four-wheeling, and snowmobiling at White Tail Lodge - Butler. Matt was wellknown in Perham. He was a member of the Perham Rotary Club and shared his antique cars in parades, homecomings, weddings, Perham Pioneer Days, and many family events.

Surviving Matt is his wife of 56 years, Margaret; his four children, Richard (Patty) Winkels, Sharon (Larry) Haarstad, Roger (Josie) Winkels, and Russell (Sheila) Winkels; nine grandchildren, Shannon (Jordan) Weir, Sarah Haarstad, Mathias Winkels, Kristofer Haarstad, Nicholas Winkels, Amanda Winkels, Brittany Winkels, Benjamin Winkels, and Johanna Winkels; brother, Alois Winkels of Northfield, Minn.; sister-in-law, Joan Winkels of Minneapolis; along with many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Matt in death are his parents; eight brothers, Adam, Lawrence, Sylvestor, George, Leonard, Leo, Joe and Tom; seven sisters, Francis Ledermann, Irene Buechler, Pauline Riepe, Agatha Kern, Margaret Ungari, Laurie Winkels and Theresa Winkels; and infant grandson, Peter Winkels.
