McClellan, Wahlund Voted to Capital One Academic All-District Team
FARGO — North Dakota State University distance runners Maddie McClellan and Brecca Wahlund have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 team in Division I women's track & field and cross country by a vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
McClellan, a junior with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average in English education, was named the Summit League Indoor Track Athlete of the Year and the Summit League Indoor Championships MVP in 2014. She became just the third woman in league history to sweep the three distance races at the indoor championships, winning the mile, 3,000m and 5,000m.
McClellan set the NDSU indoor 5,000m school record at 16:47.55 and ran 9:42.35 in the 3,000m this season. In cross country, she led NDSU to its third straight Summit League title and finished third individually at the league meet. The Perham, Minn., native was named to The Summit League's All-Academic Teams in cross country and indoor track before redshirting the outdoor track season.
Wahlund, a sophomore majoring in exercise science with a 3.89 cumulative GPA, was named the 2013 Summit League Cross Country Athlete of the Year after winning the Summit League individual title and leading NDSU to a third-consecutive team championship. Wahlund won the 6k race at the league meet in 21:24.22 – the sixth-fastest winning time in league history.
The Minot, N.D., native is a two-time All-Summit League honoree in two seasons of cross country competition, as well as being voted to the Academic All-League team.
McClellan and Wahlund become the seventh and eighth women in NDSU's Division I era to earn first-team Academic All-District honors.
As All-District honorees, both will advance to the national ballot for Capital One Academic All-America honors. Brittany Page and Leslie Brost each earned third-team Academic All-America recognition in 2013 for the NDSU women.
